I was watching Miss America 2008 and was appalled, literally appalled. I was angered to see there were only 4 black women competing out of 52 people! Not to mention no hispanic, asian, native american. Majority caucasion. This is a serious issue. Are they stating that being beautiful in american means you have to be a size 2 and have blonde hair and blue eyes….well it seems like it. So then for the semi finalist they put 2 black women in, but guess what after the swimsuit contest they BOTH got eliminated. They get eliminated even after doing extremely well…. So guess what??? The only remaining people were white. I think there is definetly something wrong with that picture. Why no hispanics, no black, no asians. There are many races in the united states. What ever happened to the melting pot, of cultures that was suppose to represent all of the various religions and cultures that america represents. But yet when we have a show called miss american, a girl that is suppose to represent america ends up 95% of the time being white. This seems very racist to me. Also it makes me sick to my stomach when also every person on that stage is a size 0-4. With the exception of Miss Utah who was the only girl to sport a full piece bathing suit ( her body would not be considered fat, but healthy looking). Guess what. Miss Utah was eliminated. So I guess Miss America also doesnt want anyone over a size 4 to win either. It really makes me sick that in the year 2008 little asian, black, hispanic girls cant watch miss america and see anyone who looks like them. Or at least someone win that looks like them. It seems very unfair. But hey what do you expect when a contest has been out for over 20 years. A contest that has been out when there were no black people at all, it wasnt even heard of to have a black person in a miss america contest. so i guess i should be happy to see 4 people. I think not. We as americans need to get over the color of our skin and realize it is what is underneath that means the most…especially in the year 2008

OMG, you are so right. I was so appalled I turned the tv right OFF after the swimsuit contest and came online to find anyone who agreed it was sickening! Miss SC and Miss Mississippi were the most beautiful women there, so how could they be eliminated after the SWIMSUIT contest?? Revolting. I am not a teen, so you have an older woman’s view, who grew up loving Miss America. You are very wise and thank you for posting this!!

Are you ladies serious? Only those that choose to enter can be considered and if we are not judging merely by diversity then we must be judging on poise, grace, cultural differences, and intelligence. Ms. Utah was absolutely gorgeous and I was rooting for her, HOWEVER I did not feel that her one piece swimsuit was why she was eliminated. THANK GOD she didn’t wear a one piece and be African American. You crazy ladies would have had a hay day with that! It is a beauty pageant ladies based on many factors. Shouldn’t you be appalled that there were no real red heads or that there were no plus sized women? Your claims are ridiculous.

Well, maybe you ladies need some education. Although there may have been only 4 that looked black I am not certain nor are you that were not some mixed races in there… The African American population is approx 12% so if we were to get 12% of 52 that would be 6. So at least for those who “looked Black enough to be called Black” then there were 2 shy and that does not count the others that may not have “looked Black”. This could be extrapolated out to all of those minority. Perhaps Ms New Mexico, who appeared not Hispanic but really could have been had her parents been descendants from Northern Spain, was chosen by her New Mexico constituents because she was a minority within her state. And, remember that the Ms America pagent participants are determined by the State Contests, so the national competition is only a competition from those state winners. Also if you are so concerned about the Black representation are you concerned about the “white” representation on Ms Black USA that is being held June 7-15, 2008. To quote their website, they are bold about it “The Search is on for “Who’s Who” Across America of Young Women of Color! Ladies between the ages of 17 and 27, showcase your talent, beauty and intellect before a Celebrity Panel of Judges. Apply Today for the 2008 National Competition!” “Mission: The Miss Black U.S.A. Pageant and Scholarship Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit corporation, recognized under the 501(c)3 code of the Internal Revenue Service. It is the mission of the Miss Black U.S.A. Pageant to provide educational opportunities to outstanding young women of color and to develop the “whole woman mind, body, and spirit.” I would hate to have my daughter be in contest simply because of her skin color or hair tones, or whether she looked “ethnic enough” to be labeled. I was proud to see those women step out and be noticed. Maybe you are just as racist as you claim they are.

As a canadian white teen who has won a pageant, and is not a size four or less… I NOTICED TOO! I was watching and thought that miss Mississippi and miss SC were GORGEOUS! And had clever opening lines while being introduced and killer walks/bodies in the bathingsuit section. When both of them were eliminated I said to my family that is sick and so sad! Then Miss Utah wore a one peice and I said good for her!! Then she was booted.
Ps. No offence but I didn’t even Notice the winner (who in my oppinion didn’t stick out at all) untill the crown was put on her pretty little head.
